“Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.”
– Proverbs 22:6 (KJV)
What if the most quoted verse in Christian parenting circles is also one of the most misunderstood?
We tend to approach Proverbs 22:6 as a promise. If I train my child the right way, they’ll follow God forever. End of story. But Scripture is more precise than that. It’s not just giving us a promise—it’s laying down a principle. And if you study the Hebrew carefully, you’ll find something sobering.
The word “train” in Proverbs 22:6 is the Hebrew word ḥānaḵ, which means to initiate, dedicate, or narrow. It carries the idea of putting something on the right path and steering it with focused intentionality. But here’s the unsettling truth: this principle works in either direction.
Train a child in the right path—and they’ll likely stay there.
Train a child in the wrong path—and they’ll likely stay there too.
The power of Proverbs 22:6 isn’t in the promise. It’s in the principle. And if Christian parents fail to grasp this, we can raise church-attending, obedience-performing children who have no real walk with God. Kids who sing in youth group but sit in judgment of their parents’ hypocrisy. Children who look spiritual but are inwardly seething with resentment and rebellion.
How does this happen?
Let me give you 7 ways Christian parents—often unintentionally—train their children the wrong way.
Parents often care more about what their children do than why they do it. Outward compliance becomes the goal. But Jesus warned about this kind of religion:
“This people honoureth me with their lips, but their heart is far from me.” (Mark 7:6)
When we raise Pharisees instead of disciples, we set them up to either become self-righteous or secretly rebellious.
Many kids only obey when voices are raised, threats are issued, or consequences are imminent. But this isn’t obedience—it’s coercion. We train them to respond to fear instead of learning wisdom, love, and respect.
“And, ye fathers, provoke not your children to wrath: but bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord.” (Ephesians 6:4)
“He that walketh with wise men shall be wise: but a companion of fools shall be destroyed.” (Proverbs 13:20)
Many Christian parents allow foolish influences—whether peers, entertainment, or even toxic church youth groups—under the illusion of “socialization.” But Proverbs is clear: fools corrupt. We are training our children through their environments.
When children hear sermons on Sundays but see compromise on Mondays, they learn to compartmentalize faith. “Do as I say, not as I do” is not only unbiblical—it’s disastrous.
“For I say unto you… Do not ye after their works: for they say, and do not.” (Matthew 23:3)
Too many Christian homes are functionally secular. We say we believe the Bible, but we don’t read it, study it, or apply it as a family. This sends a louder message than any Sunday School lesson.
Going to church is important. But it’s not a substitute for being the church. If all your child sees is performance and program, they may associate faith with empty ritual—and walk away the moment life gets hard.
“Except the Lord build the house, they labour in vain that build it…” (Psalm 127:1)
Parenting without prayer is like building a house without a foundation. You might get results in the short term, but they won’t last. Prayerful parenting invites the power of God to shape hearts we cannot reach alone.
Parents, the sobering reality is that we are always training. Even when we’re not paying attention. Even when we’re exhausted. Even when we think we’re neutral. The question isn’t if you’re training your child. The question is how.
God’s Word doesn’t leave us guessing.
But if we want wisdom for this most important task, we need more than quick tips and trendy methods. We need the fear of the Lord. We need grace-filled truth. And we need a community that helps us walk it out.
