The Proverbs Advantage is a powerful, principle-based approach to life and business, rooted in the wisdom of Solomon. It helps individuals grow wealth, lead with clarity, and make decisions guided by timeless truth.
This article was inspired by a response I received from a thoughtful friend who read my recent post:
“If you don’t let it BREAK you! You will get the BREAKTHROUGH! Promise!”
My friends question was sincere and direct: His response was simply:
“Scripture match?”
A fair challenge.
This brother fits well the exhortation that “iron sharpens iron.”
In a world flooded with clever one-liners and social media theology, it’s vital that every quote, claim, and conviction be measured by the plumb line of Scripture. So let’s answer the question not just with a yes — but with chapter and verse, with theology, with the lives of biblical saints, and with the wisdom of some of my favorite spiritual forefathers.
“Before destruction the heart of man is haughty, and before honour is humility.”
— Proverbs 18:12
Before honor comes humility. And humility, biblically speaking, is not a mood—it’s often born, developed and nurtued through suffering, loss, correction, and affliction.
King David wrote:
“The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit: a broken and a contrite heart, O God, thou wilt not despise.”
— Psalm 51:17
This was not self-pity. This was repentance. Real, soul-deep, tear-soaked brokenness.
Sadly, many of us miss the weight of David’s words, becuse we don’t slow down long enough to prayerfully get the revelation of Scripture, which requires meditation and contemplation.
It was after this breaking that David was restored.
In short:
If you don’t let it break you, it won’t bless you.
“It is good for me that I have been afflicted; that I might learn thy statutes.”
— Psalm 119:71
“The fear of the Lord is the instruction of wisdom; and before honour is humility.”
— Proverbs 15:33
What if,
Affliction is a tutor.
Humility is its classroom.
and, Wisdom is its diploma.
Unfortunately, you cannot grow in wisdom without passing through the fire of chastening. Solomon makes this clear:
“My son, despise not the chastening of the Lord; neither be weary of his correction: For whom the Lord loveth he correcteth; even as a father the son in whom he delighteth.”
— Proverbs 3:11–12
The breaking is the loving correction of a perfect Father. It’s a mercy, not a curse. It’s a setup for the breakthrough—not a setback from it.
Let the Scriptures speak:
Even the olive does not yield oil until it’s crushed.
Even the grain does not become bread until it’s ground.
Even the clay cannot be shaped until it’s softened by pressure.
Thomas Watson said:
“Till sin be bitter, Christ will not be sweet.”
Spurgeon put it this way:
“The Lord gets His best soldiers out of the highlands of affliction.”
So yes—if you don’t let it BREAK you, you will get the BREAKTHROUGH.
Promise.
Not a slogan. A principle.
Because they resist the breaking.
They avoid correction.
They numb the pain instead of kneeling in prayer.
They want “resurrection” without “crucifixion”.
“He that refuseth instruction despiseth his own soul: but he that heareth reproof getteth understanding.”
— Proverbs 15:32
Richard Baxter wisely warned:
“Usefulness comes not from the readiness of a man, but from the rightness of his heart before God.”
And it is brokenness that brings the heart into alignment with God’s purposes.
So again I say:
“If you don’t let it BREAK you! You will get the BREAKTHROUGH! Promise.”
That’s not motivational hype.
That’s Holy Scripture in motion.
That’s faith in the fire, truth on the street, theology with boots on —
That’s what real wisdom looks like.
“Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.”
— Proverbs 3:5
The broken man no longer leans on self. And because of that, God can lean His strength on that man.
You cannot carry the wisdom of God in an unbroken vessel.
The foolish resist correction.
The wise yield, learn, and rise.
So the next time the breaking comes—whether through hardship, loss, failure, or conviction—remember:
This is not the end. This is the entrance.
Breakthrough is on the other side.
